HF Bar Ranch

How to get here

Like many special places, getting to the HF Bar Ranch is a bit of a journey, but well worth the effort.  And once you are here, we look after you like you’ve never been looked after before.  All you have to do is sit back and watch the Big Sky go by.  So here are some instructions for getting here from all different directions. Remember, we are just a phone call away if you need us!

Airports
We do offer a shuttle service from the Sheridan Airport, at no charge. The Sheridan Airport offers service from Denver to Sheridan and you must purchase tickets from United Airlines. The problem with Sheridan is that they only offer two flights a day. An early morning flight and a late evening flight. The Sheridan, Wyoming Airport is an option, but the flights don’t always mesh as well with incoming flights from other areas of the country.

Another good choice is flying to Gillette, Wyoming (90 minutes from the HF Bar Ranch) or Sheridan, Wyoming (40 minutes from the HF Bar Ranch). We offer a shuttle from the Gillette Airport from 8:00 am-6:00 pm for a fee of $150.00 round trip/per vehicle. Any earlier or later flights do require our guests to overnight in Gillette because of the length of the long, dark drive. There are too many deer and we just won’t put our young drivers out there.

Further options for getting to the HF Bar Ranch are flying into Billings, Montana, Rapid City, South Dakota, or Denver, Colorado and renting a car. There are sometimes more flight options on major airlines into these communities, and many guests like to have a rental car available during their stay on the Ranch. Billings is a 2.5 hour drive, Rapid City is a 3.5 hour drive, and Denver is 6.5 hours. Many guests do choose all of these options. The Battle of the Little Big Horn (Custer’s Last Stand) is between the Ranch and Billings; Rapid City offers an opportunity to visit Mt. Rushmore and Devil’s Tower and the drive from Denver is 400 miles door-to-door with an 80 mph speed limit! In other words, they’re all pretty easy.

Driving From Billings, Montana
When leaving the Billings airport, follow 27th Street southwards out of town to I-90 eastbound. Follow I-90 east, approximately, 5 miles, at which point follow signs to Sheridan, Wyoming. Follow I-90 past Sheridan about 28 miles past to Shell Creek (Exit 47). At the bottom of the ramp, take a right onto a gravel road for, approximately, 1 1/2 miles until you intersect with Shell Creek Road. Take a left and follow Shell Creek Road up and down and around for about 7 miles until you come to a “T” junction with Rock Creek Road. Turn right onto Rock Creek Road and follow for almost 3 miles until you see the HF Bar Ranch gate directly ahead of you. The Ranch buildings are situated two miles from the gate. The trip from Billings to the HF Bar is, approximately, 165 miles (2 1/2 hours).

From the middle of town’s Main Street (you’ll be a major intersection with a stop light) take Fort Street west (toward the Mountains) until you pass the IGA. Immediately after the IGA, take a right onto DeSmet Avenue and follow it straight out of town where it becomes French Creek Road when you veer off to the left when you can see the street is ending. Stay on French Creek Road exactly 12.5 miles (about 6 of which will be pavement and 6 1/2 will be gravel). Pass the Bud Love Winter Elk Feeding Range and the UM Ranch, go up a hill and at the bottom the road will intersect with Rock Creek Road. The Ranch gate will be to your left. The buildings are two miles from the gate. The trip from Buffalo to the HF Bar is 12.5 miles (25 minutes).

From Denver, Colorado
Take Interstate 25 north towards Buffalo. Just past Buffalo you will turn off at the Rock Creek Road exit (Exit 53). Take a left at the bottom of the exit ramp and travel for, approximately, 3 1/2 miles to the juncture of Rock Creek Road and Johnson Creek Road (it’s a “T” junction so you can’t go straight anymore). Take a right onto Rock Creek Road and follow it, approximately, 7 miles to the HF Bar gate (the road will have turned to gravel from pavement about 1/2 way there). The Ranch buildings are exactly 2 miles from the gate. At the swimming pool, the road forks. Take either fork and park and follow signs to the Ranch Office for check-in.
